, he's told the pentagon, that he hasn't done anything to wrong and you know he's obviously up for this promotion. you know him very well. i met him in afghanistan last year. he's incredibly respected among his peers. what do we make of these e-mails, first of all? >> reporter: well, we don't know what they actually contain. we know that some of these 20,000, 30,000 documents -- behind me there's a protest -- 20,000, 30,000 documents may be examined in case they contain inappropriate conduct by the general. nothing proven at this point. obviously serious enough that it's referred to department of defense inspector general to examine it. we don't know quite what this holds for his future. as you say, very respected by the men around him. a man with an incredible difficult task winding down the war. and a man of course who inspired great loyalty in those who served around him. i recall one aide who served through iraq plab many times, didn't want to go back to the battlefield but would if john allen asked. he described to me how they were together at a dining facility in iraq, th
allen since the fbi probe implicated him. some defensive issues with the pentagon told us that these e- mails were flirtatious and we've been turned over to the inspector general. they came from the fbi and the implication is there was no suggestion of any criminal conduct, but you might have some uniform code of military justice violations like conduct unbecoming of an officer or service discrediting or adultery. these are all crimes under the military code before you make it sound as though allen could be in danger of more than just losing his promotion. he could be in the same kind of trouble as four-star general petraeus. >> perhaps more so herself because he's still an active duty officer and subject to the uniform code of military justice. so i think based on my conversations with the pentagon today, that is where the investigation is leading at this point. >> a lot of people are wondering whether or not this is just a one off, an out liar or is this -- outlier or a window into what goes on all the time in the military that we civilians don't know anything about. >> reporter: the
current job as the man in charge of the war and we heard from secretary panetta off the pentagon and also jay carney, the white house spokesman today. he's kept the confidence of the president and secretary panetta. so he will keep his job. the war will go on as it has for the past 11 years. >> jennifer: okay. since the president and secretary panetta issued a supportive statement does that indicate his denial checks out? general allen has denied, of course, having an inappropriate relationship with jill kelley. >> what a lot of people here in town think it means is that if he broke some form of protocol or some military guideline, it wasn't enough to trigger a criminal investigation by the fbi or by other federal officials and so that's the reason the justice department and the fbi handed this matter over to the pentagon's suspected general for it to look into it. that still could have serious repercussions for general allen. by keeping him on, by not suspending him as they have other general officers accused of crimes

lawrence is at the pentagon. chris, i don't even know where to begin because there's so much to talk about. let's start with general allen. what's the implications of this -- of him being brought in to petraeus scandal and what has he said about it? >> so far, from what we've heard from defense officials, soledad, john allen has denied any wrongdoing in this matter. what is the matter at hand is on sunday the fbi notified the pentagon that they had 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails, which contained inappropriate contact between general john allen, and jill kelley. yesterday, secretary panetta asked that john kelley -- or john allen's nomination to be the head of nato be pulled back and put on hold while the inspector general starts to dig through all of these pages to find out exactly what happened. here's how it all connects. general john allen was stationed in tampa when he was at u.s. central command. so was general david petraeus. jill kelley worked as sort of a social liaison with a lot of the commanders there. in fact, she's been -- won awards for her work with some of the military f

the subject of a pentagon investigation of allegedly inappropriate communications with jill kelley. yes, that jill kelley, we're talking about the same tampa housewife whom david petraeus' then mistress paula broadwell apparently saw as rival. a whole new chapter in a saga that since last friday has been one bombshell after another. and so far, all of them have something to do with kelley. she's a volunteer military liaison at the air force base, home of the u.s. central command in tampa, florida. kelley complained to the fbi last spring when paula broadwell was having an affair with petraeus allegedly harassed her with jealous e-mails. petraeus admitted the affair with broadwell but denies any elicit contact with kelley. so does general allen who was scheduled for a senate confirmation hearing this very week to become nato's supreme allied commander. today that's on hold, but he will continue in his position as the investigation continues. and all of that as the pentagon digs through 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails and other communications, many with kelley over a two-year period. >>

're going to have more on that in a moment. but first, we go to our pentagon correspondent, barbara starr. she has more on this developing story, breaking headline after headline today. barbara, where is general allen right now? what is his reaction to these allegations of potentially inappropriate e-mails? >> reporter: well, erin, general allen is said to be here in washington. in fact, he flew here from afghanistan, because on thursday he was supposed to have that senate confirmation hearing to become the military head of nato, all of that now on hold. sources close to general allen have told our own nick paton walsh that allen says he did not have an affair with jill kelley, a pentagon official has also said directly that general allen denies any affair, any extra marital involvement with jill kelley. but look, erin. the reality here is, defense secretary leon panetta ordered up a full-blown inspector general investigation, and a lot of people around the pentagon say leon panetta wouldn't have done that unless there was something that needed to be looked into. >> and barbara, what's yo
